Lot No. 137 #

Christian Georg Schütz d. Å

(Flörsheim 1718–1791 Frankfurt/Main) Wanderer in a wide Rhine landscape with a farmhouse on the river banks, in the foreground boatsmen loading a boat, signed lower right: Schüz f., oil on panel, 26 x 30 cm, framed

Following his apprenticeship Schütz, who very early on numbered among the most sought-after contemporary landscape painters in Germany, established himself in Frankfurt and worked for almost all of the courts in the realm over the course of his career. Most of his compositions depict idealised landscapes in the Rhine-Main region. He was influenced stylistically by the Dutch landscape painters, Hermann Saftleven and Jan Griffier the Elder. Schütz’s riverscapes are brighter and more harmonious, in line with the Rococo ideal of cheerfulness, than their 17th century precedents, which is demonstrated in the present work in the impressive, softly fading treatment of the painting’s background.
